HOCHSCHULE REUTLINGEN

ENGINEERING LAB

Playful. Tactile. Digital. The learning, training and application environment for engineering in production and logistics. Designed today for the factories and logistics systems of tomorrow.

The ENGINEERING LAB was established on 1 January 2011 as the Virtual Engineering and Training Centre (VETC); it was renamed in 2023. Spanning approximately 200 square metres, it houses state-of-the-art facilities for factory and warehouse planning, which are used for teaching, consultancy, and training and further education.

The ENGEERING LAB is a real-world laboratory in the form of a multidimensional innovation space, where all key engineering domains for production and logistics can be explored, experienced in a tangible way and put into practice. Playfully. Haptically. Digital. With immersive 3D virtual reality technologies, planning becomes a reality that can be experienced live. Factories, warehouses and logistics processes can be virtually ‘entered’, tested and optimised before being implemented in real-world operations.

At the ENGINEEINRG LAB, approaches and methods are developed, designed, demonstrated and implemented in real-world planning scenarios, and clearly communicated in teaching and professional development. Using reference models, a variety of teaching methods and digital working environments, complex interrelationships are made visible in a realistic, simple and understandable way. Key areas of focus include:

  • Methods and tools for the planning and implementation of sustainable and future-proof factories and production systems, as well as warehousing and logistics systems
  • Digital factory and warehouse planning (layout planning, material flow planning, 3D visualisation)
  • Design and evaluation of sustainable production and logistics concepts in the context of Industry 4.0/5.0
  • Inventory planning and scheduling systems for modern production systems and supply chains
  • Transferring modern methods and technologies into operational practice. From concept to successful implementation
  • Methods for planning and designing New Work environments in production and logistics
  • Establishment, design and implementation of hybrid working environments based on New Work, space concepts and digital collaboration environments
  • Development and delivery of simulation exercises and training for managers and staff
  • Manufacturer-neutral consultancy on methods, tools and technologies for the digital factory and logistics
  • Agile project management with Scrum, even for complex, international project

The full benefits of the ENGINEEINRG LAB become apparent when you can learn, test and jointly design the technology. Today, for the factories and logistics systems of tomorrow.
